Minimum exclusion size

Understanding minimum exclusion size assumes you are familiar with minimum segment size and how Eletive handles anonymity.

Definition

Minimum exclusion size further strengthens the anonymity on top of the already established minimum segment size. If a filter is applied to a segment, the group which is excluded needs to have at least the minimum value that this minimum exclusion size setting allows you to set. If the excluded group does not meet that requirement the report won’t show.

Why it’s important

At Eletive we value and want to ensure privacy & integrity because the data represents real people, not just numbers. Therefore, we enforce a minimum exclusion size and allow you to change that setting to a higher value to suit you.

Example

Emma works at a small company, she uses Eletive which has minimum exclusion size set to 5. This means that when she filters a report to focus on one group, the group that is excluded (the one not shown) must include at least 5 people. If the excluded group has fewer than 5 people, the report will not show.

One week, Emma is reviewing the sales report and wants to understand whether there are any differences in results between full-time employees and part-time employees. There are 12 full-time employees and 8 part-time employees. She filters the report to show only part-time employees, which excludes full-time employees. Since the excluded group (full-time employees) has 12 people — more than the minimum of 5 — the report appears.

The next week, there are 14 full-time employees and 4 part-time employees. She again filters the report to show only full-time employees (14), which excludes part-time employees (4). The excluded group (part-time employees) has only 4 people. Because 4 is less than the required minimum of 5, the system hides the report.

So the rule is simple: the group that is left out must meet the minimum number, or the report is not shown.

Note: This setting does not live in isolation and interacts with other concepts in the system such as Minimum segment size, Segment overlap and more. We strongly advise discussing this with your Eletive contact to find a good middle ground for your needs.
